Historical Overview Section

Lydia was an Iron Age kingdom of western Asia Minor located generally east of ancient Ionia in Turkey's modern provinces of Manisa and inland Ä°zmir. Its population spoke an Anatolian language known as Lydian. According to Herodotus, the Lydians were the first people to introduce the use of gold and silver coinage, and at its greatest extent, the Kingdom of Lydia covered all of western Anatolia.

In 546 BC, the Achaemenid king Cyrus II captured Sardis and Lydia became his satrapy. Lydia remained a satrapy after Persia's conquest by the Macedonian king Alexander III of Macedon. When Alexander's empire fell apart after his death, Lydia went to the major Asian diadoch dynasty, the Seleucids, and when it was unable to maintain its territory in Asia Minor, Lydia fell to the Attalid dynasty of Pergamum. Its last king avoided the spoils and ravage of a Roman conquest war by leaving the realm by testament to the Roman Empire.

Using the army in FoG

  • The 32 proper (ie armoured) hoplites are pretty much a given - 4 BG's of 8 maximises benefit from your generals.
  • You can take the hoplites drilled or undrilled. The choice is yours... they will march forwards regardless
  • Take the thracians (1 BG of 4) and the other average foot (1 BG of 6) in order to provide rear support.
  • Cavalry taken as Superior, Armoured, Drilled, Lt Spear Swd and used in conjunction with the LH JLS are very powerful in period
  • Take lots of LF, JLS as well and put down woods or other Difficult Going so you can put hoplites in the gaps.
  • An IC may not be worth the extra points as it makes the army to narrow and easy to get away fror, and reduces the number of generals who can be risked in fights

Buying and Painting the army

  • In prior rulesets the army included War Dogs. Why not still buy them and include them on infantry or LF bases, or - better still - Generals bases? Splintered Light do some great war dogs in their Post Roman British range

Name of Army / Date

  • Using asterisks inthe edit mode creates a bulleted list in the actual site
  • This is a lot easier to do than easier than setting up tables
  • For FoG I suggest listing your army in order or march
  • with troop desctiptions on each line, for example
  • 4 HF Armoured Average Drilled Impact Foot Swordsmen
  • 8 LG Undrilled Unarmoured Poor Bowen
  • Dont forget to include your Generals !!!

Include any notes you want here, including comments on how to use - or play against - the army.
